About copyright:

Remember to cite all images used, whether from online or print sources. Do not cite Google as a source--find the original source for the image.
Copyright:

1. Copyright information--
Make sure you attribute credit to whatever image you use, cite any text that you directly use, and cite music.

Special rules with music:

You can use up to 30 seconds of a recorded piece of music, or no more than 10%.

2. Who do I contact to get permission to use a song?
Try these three sites which track who owns the royalties/rights for a song performance. Search by the name of the artist or song.
ASCAP, BMI and SESAC www.ascap.com, www.bmi.com and www.sesac.com

If on a website, contact the producer or if there is no other information available, contact the webmaster for the site.
If on a cd, contact the production company or look at the artist's website to find contact information.

3. What do I say when asking for permission?
Explain the nature of the project, share your teacher's name, and ask permission. Let the artist know the work will be included on a webpage of projects, but that it is a school assignment.

4. Other alternatives if I do not have permission?
--Use copyright free music(see the sidebar tab on copyright free music sites)
--Make an original recording of the music using Audacity or Garage band. (From Audacity, export the music file as an mp3, using the "File" "export" command.

Need Help finding copyright free music?

Copyright Free /Creative Commons Music

Because this project is going on the web, please be aware of using copyright free, original, or creative commons music.

There is a newer type of rights reservation called the Creative Commons that gives you more rights to not only use the works yourself but to modify them as well.

There are different categories of uses for the works noted by the type of Creative Commons licensing.

1) Attribution means you can let others copy, distribute, display, and perform copyrighted work and the derivative work based on it but only if they give you credit. So if you use something from Creative Commons attributed work, you need to provide the credit back to the original source.

2) Noncommercial means you can copy, distribute, display, and perform the work but only for noncommercial purposes.

3) No Derivative works means it can be copied, distributed, displayed, and performed but only without making changes to it.

4) Share Alike means you can allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs the original work.

The Creative Commons Search site will filter through Google, Yahoo, Flickr, and other media sites to help you find Creative Common items you can incorporate into your presentations.
